The holidays are a time to relax, catch up on sleep, and spend time with loved ones, so the last thing anyone wants is a plumbing catastrophe. Some issues are sadly unavoidable, but by following our list of plumbing tips, you can avoid most of them this holiday season.

Trash Cans
Keeping trash cans in every washroom is an excellent way to avoid creating plumbing problems in your home. While this may seem like a no-brainer, it’s at the top of our list of holiday plumbing tips because you wouldn’t believe some of the things people flush. Flushing things like cotton balls, facial wipes, baby wipes, and other sanitary items that weren’t designed to be flushed is bad for the environment, but it can also wreak havoc on your home’s plumbing.

Don’t Dump Grease Down the Drain
Holiday cooking can create a lot of grease! Whether it’s from the turkey for your festive feast or your morning bacon, you should never pour leftover grease down the drain. Although the grease is liquid when you pour it into the drain, it quickly solidifies and gums up your pipes. One tip we suggest to maintain the convenience of disposal without clogging up your plumbing is to get a large glass jar and use it to dispose of all your kitchen grease over the holidays.

Don’t Abuse Your Garbage Disposal
Yes, it’s called a garbage disposal, but it’s only meant for certain types of waste. You should never use your garbage disposal to dispose of hard items like bones because they can do serious damage to your disposal and your plumbing. Although your garbage disposal might be able to shred the bones enough for them to pass through to the drain, the long shards can severely clog your plumbing and permanently damage your disposal. Put bones in your compost bin where they belong and skip the headache this holiday season by following this plumbing saving tip.

Time for a Plumbing Inspection
We could write a book of tips to help you avoid any plumbing related issues this holiday season, but the reality is the best way to know you’re in the clear is to schedule a plumbing inspection. A licensed professional can inspect the design and condition of your plumbing system to let you know if you have any pre-existing problems or areas to watch for damage. They can also repair any leaks in your plumbing or leaky faucets that could become a problem if left un-repaired.
