How can you avoid a plumbing emergency?

While the majority of plumbing malfunctions that require emergency service are unavoidable, there are some things you can do to avoid some of the preventable ones.

Protect your Pipes

One of the more extreme reasons homeowners call for emergency plumbing service is because their pipes burst. If the pipes in your home are old, then the issue may not have been easily avoidable, but there are a few things you can do to protect your pipes if they aren’t otherwise damaged.

  • Seal any gaps on your doors and windows that could let in cold air.
  • Use foam insulation to insulate your pipes and protect them from the cold.
  • Tend to any clogged drains or pipes right away to prevent a pressure build-up
  • Avoid using heavy-chemical drain cleaners as they can corrode your pipes over time and cause them to rupture.
Know your Clogs

Toilet clogs are without a doubt the most common plumbing problem that homeowners run into, but you can avoid having them turn into an emergency if you know what type of clog you’re dealing with and how to clear it.

Standard Clogs

Standard clogs are the basic toilet clogs that we all run into from time to time due to someone using too much toilet paper or attempting to flush non-flushable items like paper towels or diapers. These clogs can usually be unclogged using a plunger to clear blockages due to flushable items, but you may need professional assistance to clear non-flushable items.

Foreign Clogs

These clogs tend to be rare, but when they do occur, they’re usually the result of children fooling around or someone accidentally dropping something into the toilet. Foreign clogs occur when someone attempts to flush a solid object that has no business going down the toilet like toys, clothing, or anything else along those lines. Never attempt to plunge foreign clogs, as they will only get clogged further down the line if you’re able to dislodge them at all.
