Now that spring is finally here, it’s time to give your home a little bit of TLC and repair the damage the frigid winter left in its wake. These spring plumbing tips will help you get your home ready for the warmer weather and ensure that any damage done to your plumbing system over the winter doesn’t go undetected.
Although one of our winter plumbing tips for homeowners is to drain and remove their garden hoses, we understand that sometimes that tip is skipped, and it can be easy to forget about your outdoor plumbing until the spring. If you left your garden hose out throughout the winter, you’ll want to make sure there are no cracks or holes in it that could lead to flooding by carefully inspecting the length of the hose for any drips or leaks.
Check Sump Pump
Spring is your sump pump’s time to shine due to the increased instances of flooding caused by melting snow and rain, which is why we always include this in our spring plumbing tips. Luckily, testing your sump pump is easy. All you need to do is pour in a bucket or two of water, and if your sump pump activates and clears out the water, it’s ready for whatever spring has to throw at it.
Have a dripping faucet that’s been driving you crazy? Well it could also be costing you a lot of money, which is why fixing it is on our list of spring plumbing tips. It may not seem like much water, but when you consider that it drips all day every day, it can really add up. Contact your local plumbing service provider to come and put a stop to your money going down the drain.
Check for Toilet Leaks
Toilet leaks can have as bad, or worse, of an impact on your monthly utility bills as a leaky faucet, but the difference is you often won’t see or hear them. One telltale sign is if your toilet constantly runs, but you can also check for less noticeable leaks fairly easily. Place a few drops of food colouring in your toilet tank, and if you see the colour in your toilet bowl within 20-30 minutes, you most definitely have a leak.
