Homeownership requires you to become a jack of all trades to some degree, and one of the hardest parts of that position is dealing with plumbing related issues. We’ve put together a list of the most common plumbing mistakes and misconceptions that lead to problems to help you avoid any unnecessary mishaps.
Anything is Flushable
The only thing that was truly designed to be flushable is toilet paper. One common plumbing mistake is the belief that items like feminine hygiene products, paper towels, and products like baby wipes that claim to be “flushable” can be flushed down the toilet, but they don’t break down and can clog your pipes over time.
A Little Grease is Okay
Disposing of grease improperly is a plumbing mistake we are all guilty of committing at one time or another, but it is the easiest way to clog up your plumbing. Many people believe you can pour it down as long as you pour boiling water down afterwards, but that’s not the case, it just allows the grease to travel slightly farther before solidifying. Do your pipes a favour and keep a leftover tin can by your sink to dispose of leftover cooking grease.
A Dripping Faucet is No Big Deal
Another plumbing misconception is that leaking faucets are just a part of life. Every drip from that faucet is costing you money, and it may seem like just a measly drop, but a leak that drips just once per minute adds up to 3 litres over the course of a week.
Garburators Eat Anything
Having a garbage disposal saves you the hassle of scraping plates over the garbage can, but many people make the mistake of thinking they can put anything in them, which can cause serious plumbing damage. Consult your disposals’ manual for a list of what you can and cannot safely put into it.
Drain Cleaner/ Drop-in Tablets are the Best
The chemicals in fast-acting drain cleaners can be extremely corrosive and harmful to your pipes, especially in older homes with aging plumbing. Drop-in tablets are convenient, but they constantly release chemicals, which can cause even more damage than conventional drain cleaners.
Plumbers are for After Problems Have Already Happened
It’s easier to stay out of trouble than to get out of trouble, but when it comes to plumbing, people always make the mistake of waiting until there is an issue to call a plumber. Booking a plumbing inspection is the best way to nip small plumbing problems in the bud before they become big ones.
